I waste time re-drawing them every week. They're so old and I've given up on developing them.
(-screeching- i wrote something and then it deleted!!) As far as back story development goes I really don't take too long. My characters are all from a different time period and country than myself, so I _have_ invested a good amount of time into researching. But it's all the same country and time period, so I don't have to do separate research for each character. I'm usually able to write down a back story in a day or so and then make further edits as I continue to learn more. Because I don't have many characters though, I am able to spend a lot of time thinking about how to make them better. (For instance, I'm always making changes to my character [Grig](https://charahub.com/character/142428/GrigorijNikita-Vyacheslavovich-Bezukladnikov/public/)). I think the most time is spent drawing them, though. Most of my artwork just consists of my characters. I love to draw them.
I'll spend several hours scattered throughout the day thinking about and mentally drawing my characters, but I'm lazy about writing so it takes a whole lot longer to actually get my ideas out in physical form. For me, my characters are a part of my existence. Almost every waking moment I feel like I'm with them, developing them, or growing with them. It's sort of beautiful.
I spend a little too much time developing mine honestly. (I should really just stop and just write my story) It's so easy for me to find a hole in some kind of explanation... I've been developing the same characters and species for over 3 years now... I mean I can fully explain the biological processes of my plant boy OC but there comes a point where it's just too much... I've actually caught myself trying to develop the great grandparents of one of my Ocs - Yeah that's way too far. ^^;
For me, the general concept doesnt take very long, however if certain details arent finalized, i constantly change them untill i am content. How much time depends on my characters, for some it takes a day, some a week and for a few of my characters, its taken years for me to develop them into something i like.
I usually spend days on the design and hours on the backstory.
I spend a little time making the characters and a lot developing and changing them. For a few of them, it's been three years and I'm still tweaking. Just however long it takes, and whatever direction it takes me, really...
I've spent about 5 years on some of mine, others come to me in minutes XD It really depends. I find the characters I have for a long time really grow with me (like Xan and May JJ) and my one-shot characters (like The Pirate Queen) are a little more random and get fleshed out in around an hour or so.
Honestly all my characters are a continual process, so I've spent weeks and months on some of them. I use them to rp, so I don't have to worry about over developing them while neglecting to actually write my story!
Never take a specific time to write down a character. I come out with a concept, then the character grows up on its own in the I put them in everytime I get a moment to dream. But I think it'd take months at least to properly grow a character. Some of mines are years old and they keep changing though so I'm not sure.
I spend a LOT of time on my characters. I think even after they're 'done' they still aren't actually done. While I'm writing my story I continually add bits or slightly change parts of their personality after realising who they really are. It's complicated :P
Just about every character I've posted here has been in the works for years... Sometimes I'll throw together a concept over a couple of weeks to fill a particular role in an RP, but I don't consider them 'real' until they've been through some stories and made some connections. Characters who never really connect with anyone else tend to gradually fall by the wayside because they don't have much impact on the story, so it takes me a long time to consider a character part of the main cast.
so much. too much.
Well.. a lot, like sometimes I get this great idea and I have to write it out and then after I write it it just stands there for long before I can do it again. My characters are never done, not really, they just keep developing and developing. I sometimes spend months on one or two, then maybe come up with a new one. It always depends on the character.
I will get an idea for a character, either through daydreaming or a random thought, but it won't exactly be 'complete', you know? I'll try to pick a name that fits with their setting, but I don't actually spend a lot of time on a backstory; that's actually pretty easy for me.
For me, the process never really stops. I'll just keep adding, retooling until it suits me at that particular moment. Of course, major details are concrete and don't tend to change too much. But the subtleties, the minor things; I could spend a lifetime working on those.
I started making up characters as a first grader. One story in particular (at the time when The Parent Trap was my favorite thing ever and I was obsessed with twins) had a main character who I, as I grew up, got tired of, but she had a friend who I became interested in, and then along with all of the characters essential to her backstory I created a new world for them, which is my main story/world. So yeah, that was about seven years? My second main story/world I created in approximately three seconds last summer but constantly tweak and develop, and then my third one is one I created this winter where everything that is canon has already occurred.
A lot. The basics come quite easy, but before the character is completely fleshed out, usually a few months of writing have come to pass.
I spend alot of time, about 3-7 hours. i just love meh characters ;w;
When actually creating a character, I take maybe about a day? I mainly use them to roleplay, so I just get really excited to play them and write out and research EVERYTHING all in one or two sittings. From then on, it's a slow and gradual process that never really stops. As I write with them, I learn more about them. I've had one of my characters for over a year now, and I still don't feel as though she's fully developed. Many times, as I develop a character, I create their connections as well, and flesh them out. It's a never ending flow of characters, to be honest, ahaha.
