I would be in
Wine tech in Midnapore sells 2 row pale malt for $60 a 55lb bag is where I buy mine, Michel is a stand up guy too. Would a bulk buy save much money?
There are group malt purchases that come around a few times a year. I will let the guys who run it chime in, but yes, the savings are worth it, as 55lb bags are under $30. As a group you have to buy a tonne, or pallet of 40 bags to get those prices. Spring 2019 was the last one I was aware of.
FYI- I was passing thru Strathmore today and did a quick visit to Origin Malting. After some friendly discussion thru Kyle (Ops Mgr), was able to purchase a 50 lb bag of malt for $37.50 as a Yeast Wrangler. Sounds like this is the cost they give to breweries as well. Not too shabby. Can't vouch for the malt just yet but it smells great. Very fresh smelling. Their commercial brewery customers are top notch. As Dakota mentioned the other group buy for Gambrinus malts is a bit cheaper if you can wait. Think the bags are 55 lbs as well. Origin Malts are excellent products - using their Pils and Munich currently. Went to their 2nd B-Day celebration last week, and sampled their line up of beers made from their own malts: all were great! I think you will have excellent results as well!
Wes Devauld Is the guy who now organizes the Gambrinus group malt buys. email him to be put on the group list. [email protected] Probably next buy this fall.
Wow, great info!
I just got an email announcing fall malt order is being organized. Contact Chris Braun for details. [email protected]
Please close this thread. The group malt purchase has been closed.
Ugh, looks like I missed this. Anyone else need more grain?
Has there been any consideration to group buying from Rahr Malting? You'd think their costs would be very low due to their high volume production and shipping distance to Calgary is shorter from Alix, AB vs. Armstrong, BC. Guessing the downside would be less variety of malt types.
We have talked to them and Origin Malting in the past, and even with the shipping, Gambrinus was still less expensive per bag. But it would definitely be easier for me to run out there to buy 3 bags than go to Armstrong.
