I loved this talk and was impressed with Jason's knowledge! I remember not being as impressed last time he was on, but that was probably due to the topic at the time. I was on board with his explanations until he got talking about the Bardos though. He says that there is no self/atman/soul in Buddhism, but the way he describes it makes it sure sound like there's a self outside the body that's experiencing the Bardo... I think we need a new school that combines Buddhism with modern scientific theory - this could help us throw out old, delusional ideas in favor of evidence based models. The Bardo (as described by Jason) just sounds like a person who has fallen into an OOBE state, which is actually a state of pure thinking inside your brain. The idea of momentum/inertia defining your form/trip sure sounds like the way synapses work between neurons - the more you use a synapse, the stronger the connection gets (like how habits occur in waking life)... The way I see it, modern neuroscience definitely agrees with the idea of no self!

@ICS I love you but your comments regarding Buddhism are the same as a any Dogma lover on these. Let the woo people woo, stay in your lane, since you have one.

@spiritvondimension Thanks for the reply! It wasn't my intention to insult anyone, so I apologize if I caused you any suffering! I like to play with ideas, and all my personal ideas are based on my own experience - they can also change based on new evidence. I love talking/thinking about these topics, and discussion is one of the only ways to discover another person's 'lane' without making assumptions. What part of my post caused you to think that I was attacking 'woo people'? I would love to hear your own ideas on anatta vs. a self that experiences a bardo! If you took offense to me asking for scientific inquiry into Buddhist ideas, you might be interested to learn that the 14th Dali Lama has called for the same (as Duncan mentioned in multiple DTFH episodes). The book 'Consciousness at the Crossroads' is all about this, and is a good read!

Thank you for making me cry today. Grief hits out of nowhere, like when you hear a podcast episode from a couple years ago about the Bardo and the intro is unexpectedly vulnerable and real, and those tears are actually not bad at all. So I agree, just cry. When I was in that shock after my sister's death, I vacillated between straight numbness, this weird feeling that I didn't feel as bad as I should, and this questioning everything like "why do I get to eat and walk around still?" Bless you for this, and for not editing out your sniffling :')
