Charging a 48 volt bank with 12 volts?

Sorry, I don't speak electric, or not much. Been considering electric motor on my sailboat, but at the moment trying to install a Dead Dinosaur Juice motor. However, can you explain how you charge a 48 volt bank from a 12 volt charger? I have a 12 volt system with two batteries in my overland truck, and charge them, when camping, off a 80 watt panel. I also plan a 12 volt system on the boat. But how do you combine 12 and 48 volts? Do you have a wiring setup to change the whole lot to 12 volt for charging? Which means you have to switch it back to 48 volt when planning to use the motor? I would be afraid of burning out a lot of 12 volt lights etc if they get fed 48 volts.

Use a voltage set down regulator , Your charging circuit should be 48v as well. Then use the step down to run all your 12v need.
