"Phantom" M6 codes

How come if I'm trying to "salvage" a few lines of Gcode to do some setup operation on my GRBL 1.1h machine, I can edit out all the M6 codes and copy the file fragment over to my laptop, and somehow the offending code is STILL THERE and the machine halts on it? (This is in a code fragment that either doesn't have the preprocessor option available, or I'm just trying to use a fragment of something generated for something else.) Is there a "more detailed" Gcode editor that I ought to keep a copy of near the machine to make certain they're all gone, and what would the name of that be? Can someone please explain what's going on? This shouldn't be some kind of huge mystery...
