I think that the government taxing the crap out of everything and taking everyone’s money is unfair and unjust. Taxes on things was one of the main reasons we were fighting for our independence for England in the first place. Ever hear about the Boston Tea party? I mean it was a literal fight between the common people and the government over the taxes on tea being raised to unfair amounts. I also want to bring up the fact that even if you, lets say, pay off a house, you are still required to pay for the land it’s on and all the amenities that come with(plumbing, electricity, air conditioning/ heating, etc). Why? You already paid it off, why should we have to pay more and more. It’s because of taxes! And it’s even worse when they come after the money you put all your hard work into getting. Why do they do that? They didn’t work for it. They didn’t go to school for your job so you can make a living and get by in life. So why do we have to give up our money. And speaking of schooling, they put taxes on that too. The money from taxes doesn’t just go to the government either, and we don’t always know where it goes to. Now I can understand that changing or getting rid of something like taxes(which has been a part of society for hundreds of years) isn’t exactly the easiest task. However, I think there might be a couple solutions. One might be for everyone to send out as many complaints as they possibly can. I know that sounds pretty childish or ridiculous, but hear me out. If enough people come together, all believe in something, and spread the word about that belief or cause or whatever, it’s bound to be heard or noticed at the least. It’s not much but it’d be a pretty good start. After that I would say start marches against it. If that doesn’t work then everyone just stop paying taxes. If everyone did it then they would have to lower taxes at least because then the government would start to lose money and lots of it too, thus driving our country further into debt and causing a decline in pretty much everything. They couldn’t possibly punish us all. Of course all that wouldn’t hurt just the government, but us as well. We would all be paid a lot less. Not to mention that the entirety of the US would be driven into a state of poverty for, hopefully, a short period of time. And it could all ultimately fail and the government would just make the people suffer anyway and they sit pretty and wait for the people to give up. I highly doubt it would come to that, though. I would say that, in some cases, civil disobedience is just and worth it. In Antigone, Antigone was being punished because she stood up for what she believed in. She never fought back and took everything that came her way. The people of Thebes were mad because they thought she was innocent and everyone turned against Creon. He eventually would change his mind and wish to release and pardon Antigone. Gandhi was a very peaceful man and was strictly a pacifist when it came to his protests. He had most indians on his side and was willing to go to jail for his causes and died for what he believed in with great payoff. Works cited •Thoreau, Henry David.
