Civil Disobedience

I believe that the Senior Off-Campus Lunch Policy enforced in Rockford Christian is unjust. This policy states that all seniors are allowed to leave campus for lunch, as long as they have obtained a written parental/guardian permission to do so. In my opinion, I believe that this is indeed a great policy, as it allows seniors to have the opportunity to eat whatever they would like. However, I believe that all high schoolers should be allowed to go off campus to eat lunch. By doing so, students will not have to rely on the school’s limited variety of lunch. In addition, not all students have the time to make and bring their own lunch to school, and as a result, they are forced to buy lunch in school. In many cases, this policy could also benefit students with special dietary needs, as the school’s lunch doesn’t always meet their particular needs. In my opinion, as long as students obtain a written parental permission form to do so, and act responsibly when out of campus, I simply do not see a reason to not allow other high schoolers to go off campus for lunch. In order to change this policy, I would gather a group of students to go off campus during lunch everyday. I could even further spread this movement through various social media platforms, such as Instagram or Snapchat. Following that, we would try to get more students to join, and help spread the movement. We would keep doing so, until a teacher or the principal finds out. However, some consequences of our actions could include receiving a detention, suspension, or even an expulsion, depending on how severe the case is. I hope to be able to allow students to have the freedom to choose what they would like to eat for lunch. By doing so, this can open up opportunities for them to become responsible and allow them to manage their time, essential for one in times to come. I think that civil disobedience is just and worth the potential consequences. A very famous example of this is shown by Martin Luther King Jr. Although he was briefly imprisoned, and even assassinated for his non-violent protests against racism, his legacy still lives on. Although racism still exists in today’s society, it has become less prevalent over time, as people of all colors and races are treated equally. In Antigone’s case, although she ended up dying because she went against the law, and buried Polyneices, this resulted in Creon to realizing that his pride had ultimately caused all of this chaos, which led him to also realize that the gods were the only source of wisdom. Therefore, I believe that in my case, the consequences will be worth it, as in later years, other students will be able to experience the freedom of going off campus for lunch.
