I think it is unjust that we have homework (unless we don’t finish the classwork because we weren’t focused). I think homework is morally wrong because it causes stress and has little to no effect on test scores and future success. For example, Finland assigns barely any homework and they are sixth in the world for math and science (above the United States). Also a study by Stanford about school related stress says: “when it came to stress, more than 70 percent of students said they were “often or always stressed over schoolwork,” with 56 percent listing homework as a primary stressor. Less than 1 percent of the students said homework was not a stressor.” The article also proceeded to talk about how many students experienced stress symptoms from schoolwork such as: headache, exhaustion, and sleep deprivation. To argue against homework, I would first go to the office or the board and talk to them about getting rid of homework altogether. Then, if that doesn’t work, I would stop doing my homework and encourage others to do the same. If I and others decided to boycott home work we would probably get zeros in the grade book and colleges might view us as irresponsible. My goal would be to end homework. Since that may be unrealistic, I would want to at least see a dramatic decrease in our homework load. In my opinion, I think civil disobedience is worth the potential consequences because it enables our society to grow and improve. I believe that Antigone’s civil disobedience was just because she was trying to do what she viewed was right and she wanted to show how the new king didn’t have fair laws. Another example of an act of civil disobedience that was effective was when Rosa Parks refused to sit at the back of the bus. Because of this brave act, our culture started to reform into a more fair and equal place. In the example of homework, it would be beneficial to protest because it would save many people from excess stress. Without ever going against the laws and rules set in place, we would never adapt to the constantly changing world.
