I lost an argument....

I was having a discussion with a man who was sure that abortion was murder and we were having a reasonable conversation. Then another man said that the book of Job was proof that God cares about us, which pissed me off. I realized something about myself… I cannot abide harm to children… and it makes me angry when someone can. Once you start yelling you lose the argument. How good can I be at making an argument if there are subjective things I cannot change?

Obviously you must have a thorough knowledge of the subject matter and a knowledge of rhetoric. To be able to argue ad hock is a talent many aspire to be great at and to achieve this can take years of practice and formal education. Most choose to pick their arguments. Start with studying philosophy and what are called logical fallacies, then examine examples of these argumentative pitfalls. See if you can pick them out of debates and I suggest Christopher Hitchens. He is a joy to watch.

Watch people like Reza Aslan. He is a bottom feeder. You'll hear his populist prostitution and you can get a feeling for how to disembowel this type of emotional snake oil salesman.
