Transitive or linking pattern?

Satish, I saw the recording where you wrote this sentence from Tommy: The train was late. But you labelled it as having an intransitive complex pattern. My question is: why isn't it a linking pattern?

Sehten. Thanks for bringing this up. Clearly, you are confused because I am completely wrong here. Intransitive is for example: The train(S) arrived (A). Here, nothing is needed to the right of the fine verb, although you might have an adverbial which is optional, for example: The train(S) arrived (P ) late(A) In: The train was late it is a copula pattern That is The train (S) was (P ) late (Sc) Sorry for confusing you, and Tommy and everyone else. And thanks for raising the question.
