Tree Identification?

Can you use any of the Kaarta devices to scan trees outside, along with RGB data to accurately determine the tree diameter along with tree species? I am aware that it is possible to scan trees, but with just a 3D model, it can be tough to determine tree species, if there is a way to access individual RGB photos with location along with the LIDAR data, this could be plausible. My company could be interested in this application.

Contour associates images with the pointclouds and meshes. Meshing on leaves would be tough, and the colorized point cloud might be too sparse on the leaves for identification. The images are all available though, so identification is quite possible. It might take some effort to figure out the best pipeline to minimize the amount of time to categorize each tree.

Is there a quick way to view a photo associated with a RGB point on a tree? For instance, if I click on a point on the tree, could the pictures used to render them pop up easily. And yes I agree that it would take some trial and error to determine the point of deminishing returns with time/profit in regards to data acquisition.

Hi Alex, one way to determine tree diameter along with tree species is using Deep Learning. This is my company -- Zenith Robotics -- area of expertise. It would be great to discuss more.

Yes I would be glad to. Here is my email: [email protected]

By taking a photo of each tree during the scan, you can select using only these photos through a single button click and the Kaarta Reality Layer will show the image at each location sufficient for identification.
