I was born and raised in the Bay Area, I was blessed to grow up with an amazingly loving and supportive family. My grandparents were first generation Mexican- Americans who lived during the Great Depression and despite all the discrimination and hardships they endured growing up; I only knew them to be the family that would open their home to anybody with nowhere to go. There was always room and an extra place setting for anybody at the Mata’s House! They pretty much helped my mom raise me, my mom the middle of three kids and grew up with a tom-boy can do attitude. And despite working in a male driven industry that constantly tried to keep her down she rose. And even with crazy sixty hour work weeks she still always found the time to support me in every new venture. As a kid I struggled to find myself, but thanks to my grandparents they introduced me to music and with their and my mom’s support my musical road to self discovery took off.
So I'm sure you're wondering how does this relate to the Lavender Pen Tour? It was through music that I learned how to express myself, connect with others and even as an escape from reality. And one of the strongest connections I’ve made has been with my mom, and over the past several years she was let go from her six figure job along with her health insurance due to a disability, was catfished out of her entire life savings, lost her house, lived in a homeless shelter and then moved clear across the country to South Carolina just to try and get back on her feet. Even through all of that she remains up beat and I her number one concern. It was almost three years ago that she moved to Greenville South Carolina, before I joined she was supposed to fly home for Christmas and come see the chorus with me but was tragically unable to. Now I’m apart of the chorus and am going on the Lavender Pen Tour which is not only going to South Carolina but now the entire tour will be in Greenville South Carolina. It's been over 2 years since I’ve seen her, and I never would have thought she’d see the chorus this way, the Lavender Pen Tour is more than spreading awareness and equality through music but for me it’s also about family, the family your born into and the family you choose to be apart of and the LPT will be bringing my two families together on October the 13th 2017
