In sketching out my leg vise chop I'm considering an offset chop (mostly just for aesthetics). ~8.5" wide at top ~4" wide at bottom (~3" thick oak). Is this ok, or will it tend to rack horizontally?
It seems like I've seen historical examples and could be similar to a jack leg vice, though the parallel guide would be vertically aligned with the screw.

I have seen a few asymmetrical chops, including one that was Moravian.
They'll rack a little if you try to clamp on the area outside the screw, but that is always the case with any chop.
So feel free.
