After an internet search for the nav updates for my 2015 ML250, I went to my local dealer... WOW... only $500 for the update. They recommended that I purchase a GPS unit with lifetime updates and abandon the update idea. Any suggestions?

Theirs is a good suggestion. That's because at their best, the navigation capability of integrated car systems is sub par compared to WAZE and other mobile navigation app programs. Some cars now have the capability to integrate WAZE into their navigation programs from the mobile phone. This is a terrific concept.

you can always replace the headunit with one that uses apple Carplay or android auto. this is what I have done in my 2006 ML, I just plug in my phone and go!

If you have Garmin map pilot that used SD card you can update it by downloading Mercedes download manager. Firmware updates in minutes and maps take hours. https://www.la.mercedes-benz.com/en/passengercars/being-an-owner/garmin-map-pilot/stage.module.html

gbarringer, the above description is unclear. Would you kindly explain more fully what you mean.

If you do not have the Command system which has a hard drive for Navi but the audio 20 system that uses an SD card for the Navi you can update it yourself. You can log into the site I posted and download the Mercedes Download Manger to a PC or a Mac. Insert the SD card into your computer and run the program. It will check that it is an SD card with Garmin Map Pilot on it and then check for firmware and map versions. It will then ask do you want to update the firmware which will take a few minutes to update. Then it will ask to update maps. Note maps will take many many hours to update. I did it and when to bed and woke up the next morning and maps were updated. You can then insert the updated card in the slot on the car and it will then handle the SD card as if it is a new card. If you have the Command system then the dealer will have to do the updates.

I checked mercedes web site you listed and it said you had to use the original Mercedes SD card. Is that correct. I bought mine used and don't have it. IF so can one be purchased at dealership

The SD cards can be bought on eBay for less than $100. They are out of date but they are MB SD cards and you can update. The dealer will charge around $500 for the card and it could have set in stock and could be older firmware and maps.
