Buy the best car you can afford. There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes-Benz. I would suggest checking the classifieds at the MBCA website along with several online auctions such as Bring A Trailer, Cars and Bids and the MB Market. You can also try the Mercedes Heritage website as well. There are some pretty decent cars that show up at these websites. Make sure you have a pre-purchase inspection done by an MB expert to look for any expensive repairs that may be lurking under the exterior. A pre-purchase inspection might wind up saving you thousands of $$$. Good luck.
