Charging battery, 1998 SL500

Is it OK to connect a trickle charger to my battery? My owners manual says to disconnect the battery before charging. However when one does that, the car has to be driven 100 miles or so (I'm told by my mechanic) to recalibrate the emissions system. Typically the state inspection is right around when the car comes out of storage. Thx

I just bought one for my 2005 CLK500. If I don't charge it then it will be dead in the spring. The trickle charger has been going on and off for about a week. This is the first trickle charger I have used and I think it will be better than when I was using a charger every few weeks. It puts out less than the charger just to maintain the battery. I think it will be ok. I think if you were using a charger on 12Amp then you would be risking damaging the electronics.

Right after I posted there were multiple duplicates of my reply as if I was copy paste and replied again and again. later they disappeared.

Never saw the copies. Must have been some glitch.

Although the electronics in your 98 SL may be different than in my 89 SL, I've never had a problem hooking up a Deltran Battery Tender during winter storage. Actually, I use them on the John Deere, the Harleys, etc. without issue, and everything starts right up each spring.
