Problem with topics ending up with the same individual URL

Mon, 18 Sep 2017 10:45:24 GMT

We have a bug with our forum where Forum topics with very similar titles have ended up with the same individual URL and now we can't delete the problem topics. I was trying to link to each topic and noticed that the link for all five went to the same forum topic. Now when I try to delete them, they either go grey but don't disappear, or they disappear, and then come back when I refresh the forum page. I have seen previously that the forum used to recognise when a topic title would result in the same topic URL and auto add a unique number to the end of the URL. This doesn't appear to have happened today and hence our problem. We would really like to have the problem forum topics removed before they cause trouble for our users. Thanks

Hey Tony! You sent us a couple of emails on this topic, so I emailed you back on this one. I figured I'd post here as well in case you looked here first. I mentioned a few things about how we're going to help you out, but I don't know if I mentioned about how we resolved the root of the problem: *Multiple posts with the same URL.* This is now impossible. Over the weekend we rebuilt the posting system in such a way that you cannot create two threads with the same URL. The system will add a modifier at the end to differentiate like `_1`. So if somehow this thread got duplicated each thread would have it's own unique URL something like this: `!/setting-up:problem-with-topics-ending` `!/setting-up:problem-with-topics-ending_1` `!/setting-up:problem-with-topics-ending_2` The system is even tested to manage post requests 10ms apart, so it can handle high-speed API requests. So yeah, you won' t be running into any duplicate URL threads made after this weekend. We'll, of course, keep an eye out for any other issues, but you should be good — once we get your leftover threads deleted. :)
