Squarespace comments

Wed, 25 Jun 2014 10:39:47 GMT

Just looking at trying Muut on Squarespace.. two line forum embed looks easy enough but what about comments? E.g. from your example: "<a class="muut" href="">Comments</a>" but how do we make article-name a variable? Else all comments for all posts are going to appear on all posts?

To make myself a bit clearer, please provide embedding example for comments for use on squarespace post blog code injection box :) I will sign up for 12 months up front if you help me get it working :)

I ping the rest of the team! I'm not so familiar with Squarespace. Also need some precisions about that type of structure ;)

Hey, Mathew; The [link you shared](, did you try the code example *Edit 2* that the top poster made? The OP said it works, and it might be the exact code sample you need. Let me know if that isn't the case!

I didn't really understand it TBH. Plus they are using flat comments and I wanted threaded, and I wouldn't know how to modify it for that. I'll paste it in and see what it does though.

Don't know what I'm doing with it unfortunately, as they don't say where they have that code and what other code they are using elsewhere to get it working.

Oh, the only difference between unthreaded and threaded commenting is that the final separator in the Muut path should be a `/` rather than a `:`. So, in the example code on that stackexchange thread, the line that reads: ``` var api_url = "//" + article_id; ``` would actually become: ``` var api_url = "//" + article_id; ``` It looks like they're placing that code in the spot where footer content is written (see the OP), in a template file or whatnot. Is there a more specific spot that is tripping you up? It's hard for me to answer as I don't know where exactly their examples are tripping you up (otherwise I'd just be regurgitating what they were saying). Is there a specific step that is more confusing to you? Definitely want you help get you set up with Muut!

Since I don't know how it works and in that link it is one persons very specific example, and no instructions are provided, I modified the /test/comments etc. parts to match my forum and modded the flat to threaded (also tried it as flat). Just didn't seem to do anything. On its own nothing is displayed on the website. I also tried it along with the Muut comment embed example code and it didn't change the behaviour of that. I have the forum embedded with the two line example code, that worked fine. The example comment embed code also works but not for squarespace as we don't have a variable "article-name". Every comment is put in the same leaf "article-name"! If you read this where this users claims success.. he goes on to say that the comments actually don't work properly..!/setting-up#up-and-running-a-forum-in-s Pretty sure that's because his comments are all going into the same leaf so his embed code is wrong, so I'm not the only one. There's people here with the same issue.. read comments lower down, the comments appear on all articles because they're in the same leaf.. Someone else here struggling with comments on squarespace:!/setting-up:i-really-want-to-get-commen Courtney says there is a guide coming for squarespace but that was back in March?

Ok, I've been messing with it for a few hours and I have managed to get that code to generate the unique leaf URLs per article. Not sure how and whether or not the site would pass any HTML checkers!! Now the link it creates isn't turned into an embedded muut thing, just a link to it which opens it on the muut site (which doesn't work with the "i" in the URL). Hmmm. Official Muut tutorial for Squarespace would be much appreciated. Looking at paying as I need the Private option. I'll give up shortly and wait for an official tutorial. Anyone know of any good Muut alternatives (must have forum and commenting integrated, else I'd use Disqus and Nabble). Thanks.

Hey, Mathew; can you show me a link to your site? It sounds like the Muut JS probably isn't being loaded. Anyway, if I could see one of the pages that'd help us troubleshoot.

Can I email it? Thanks.

Hey, glad we got this working over e-mail. Good luck with your community, and happy Muuting!

To anyone else who has this problem, you can get a unique ID for each blog post by looking at the `<article id="xxxx">` attribute and using JavaScript to assign it to a variable.

Thanks, I actually got mine working by peeking at your gamebros site ;)

Cool! I hope it's still working for you. Something happened between now and April 25 that caused my implementation of Muut comments to break completely. As far as I can tell, nothing's changed in the Squarespace template, so I'm looking through the most recent Muut updates and improved documentation to see what's up. Back to the drawing board for me.

I only did it a week ago and worked Ok using your code last time I checked. I will test it again.

Seems Ok though it's only me making one comment and seeing if it ends up in a relevantly named thread

I think I'll try reverting back to v1.11.14 and see if that helps.

I've been using Muut in my Squarespace store and on individual changes for a couple years now. I haven't had this problem! It has worked well for me!
