I took Dexter with me today to Age UK for a short visit whilst I left money for my dad. I thought we'd stay outside and asked if my dad could come out but they said to bring Dexter in if he is ok with that. I was armed with sausages, salmon mousse, kibble etc, so we went in and my dad was happy to see us both. He has dementia but still knows who I am or he gets me muddled with one of my sisters. Any way, Dexter loved showing off his tricks and getting petted. A career asked if Dexter could go and meet some other day centre people who were desperate to see him. One elderly lady was telling me how much she would love a dog and loved meeting Dexter, she gave him a bit of sausage when he sat for her. I'm glad they didn't see him when he first got out the car, lol. I'd parked somewhere that he's never been before, he's never done this walk from where I'd parked to the day centre either or visited the day centre. After some time of him sniffing and me not going anywhere until his attention was on me, we did the 10 minute walk (took about 20 minutes with Dexter with me) but he did settle and got the idea that we only moved when the lead was loose and he was beside me. I did figure 8 and proximity, stopping and sitting whilst people passed on the narrow paths, plus other behaviours and shorter times between treats depending on situations. All in all, I was very pleased with my boy. It was lovely to see so many faces light up at seeing a dog, especially my dads.
