Methods of safe sleep fragmentation?

I was talking to a friend recently, who said he sleeps with his lights on. While this is incredibly unhealthy because of the suppression of endogenous melatonin production and circadian rhythm dysregulation, it was interesting to note that it makes him wake up naturally after each REM cycles (he posted pictures of his recorded sleep architecture). People trying to fragment their sleep might want to experiment with red light exposure during sleep. Now, red light still partially suppresses melatonin, but I haven't come across any evidence that it shifts or delays the circadian rhythm, so you could easily just supplement melatonin at the start of the night.
