http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2941300/ "In conclusion, although previous studies in rats were less successful in obtaining continuous artifact-free awake EEGs, Leemburg et al. (3) succeed and show that sleep homeostasis is preserved during chronic sleep restriction, in part by intrusion of sleep and SWA into wakefulness." There have not been, however, chronic sleep deprivation studies implementing polyphasic sleep, and I predict sleep homeostasis may present differently under conditions of sleep restriction + naps (for the same TST). But as for now, we cannot say polyphasic sleep does mitigate chronic sleep deprivation, nor can we say it changes sleep homeostasis. Going in this direction with future research would reveal valuable information about sleep homeostasis, I think.
