Just brainstorming here but something like this must happen soon. I do not want to have to go to cities to socialize anymore and I think there are others out there that might be into this. I used to organize punk shows and raves when I was a kid. They all went off well but profit was never a motive, just the music and the experience. We rented halls, had a local place called the Cog Factory that hosted lots of shows, and even had a few shows at abandoned buildings, after hours warehouses, etc. Usually, a group of friends would get together, find some bands or dj's, and we'd make some flyers. For the underground shows, the flyers would direct people to random locations where they'd find out the real location once vetted in some way. We never had problems with assholes or cops because it was mouth to mouth advertised and super organized. I want to do this again, but not in the cities. The shows/festivals in the cities just aren't conducive to socialization, or they draw those that aren't very interested in socializing outside their groups. The cost and complexity of "off icial" stuff is just ridiculous too. For festivals in the boonies to work, here's what I think needs to happen: Scout location- Done. I have a few locations in mind that are within an hour of two major cities and are the perfect balance of accessible/remote/water/etc Find Bands- Most of my friends are in awesome bands, from reggae, to folk punk, and everything in between. They know lots of bands too. This shouldn't be an issue. Set up a website for info- Domain name prototribal.org is purchased and I'm working on the site. The site will have info about what to bring, skills needed, who's playing/presenting, basic but anonymous location info, and a link to get tickets. Charge a bitcoin fee to cover costs, with a refundable deposit that is refunded when the festival is over and the camp is clean. This is a non profit/anti profit deal. We want to learn how to meet our needs without having to rely on money and civilization and have a fun time doing it so that's the intent. It costs money to put gas in bands' vans, accommodate presenters from out of town and cover other expenses though. It will be as inexpensive as possible and the deposit thing will encourage people to be responsible. Any funds from ticket donations that are left over after covering costs can go to future prototribal projects, one of the presenters' projects, whatever the campers decide on Sunday morning. Ideas? Spread the word about it in a selective way. No public flyers or inviting people you don't know and haven't partied/camped with. This will be 3-5 miles from a road and 15+ miles to town so people need to be able to handle themselves. Nothing's prohibited but people that can't keep cool or aren't responsible for their actions are discouraged and will be dealt with appropriately. ;) Set a time window for ticket purchases. To purchase a ticket, the campers will need to email links to some kind of social network or describe a bit about who they are, their camping/hiking abilities, and their intentions for attending the festival. The organizers will check them out and send the bitcoin donation address to people that pass the vetting process. The ticket will be the bitcoin transaction public key, which will be checked against a list by the shuttle drivers. When the ticket buying time window closes, we'll know how much sound gear, solar, and other supplies we'll need and can make sure the location is appropriate, shifting the location if necessary. I'm thinking around 50 people is a good limit, not counting the bands, presenters, and a few volunteers, maybe more depending on the location. On the day of the show, send out the info on where the shuttles will be picking up. It will likely be a public storage or gated private commercial yard so the vehicles will be safe. Campers could also drop off passengers and gear at the trail head, follow the shuttle back to the parking area, then take the shuttle back to the trail head. Carpooling/ridesharing/public transport would reduce costs for everyone. The shuttles drop people off at the trail head. A few volunteers will be positioned along the trail to direct people to the festival area. We want this to be a nothing but foot prints left behind kind of deal so volunteers might help with organizing camp spots and other logistics necessary to keep things no negative environmental impact. Dance, jam, learn, camp, eat, socialize, play, sleep under the stars from Friday afternoon to Sunday noonish. Clean up, hike out, get shuttled back to parking/bus stop/home. Repeat process with new bands and workshops as often as possible! We also want to do smaller, single day events with local artists and presenters that are totally free. Just recently had the idea to decentralize the PA system too, transmitting the bands and presenters over a local meshnet so people can tune in from their campsites as they wish. If everyone brings a wifi capable device and battery/solar powered speakers, everyone will be able to listen to whatever, whenever, and a big PA system and generator won't have to be hauled in. Who wants to help pull this off?
