Good afternoon. I'm an active military member writing to ask about concurrent Guard service, and how drill weekends and other military commitments are managed with the department. Are prolonged absences for deployment authorized and would the wider experience base offered by a an active Guard member be desired, or seen as an impediment? Thanks for your time.

We have many officers that are frequently on military leave and deployments. I would like one of our military officers to answer this question, however as it is the weekend, I will not have specific answers for you until next week. Please check back and I will have good answers for you.

Ccatalina322, I finally got a response for you from one of our LIeutenants that is also a ranking officer in the military. Here is his response . . . I’ve been in the Utah Army National Guard for 31+ years which includes the 20+ I’ve been with the SLCPD. The city and the PD have been very good to work with regarding weekend drills, annual trainings and 2 different year + deployments. The city gives you 11 days a year paid military leave that is in addition to your other accrued vacation and holiday time. That translates to almost 3 weeks a year. If you exceed the 11 days you can either take unpaid military leave or use other types of leave if you want to. As a Guard or Reserve member you are covered by the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA). The city is well versed and follows the act accordingly. There are several of us at the SLCPD that serve in the various branches of military.
