Differentiating between "Levels" style and "Animals" style Big Room House?

Shouldn't there be a distinction? Big Room has definitely shifted away from the bombastic, uplifting style (aka Levels, Don't You Worry Child, Hindsight, etc) etc. toward songs with minimalist drops or an odd percussion pattern (aka Animals). They sound like completely different genres.

I'm going to use the line that gets blarted at me on a weekly basis: 'Genres evolve' It still has all the hallmarks of big room house, however instead of the melody continuing into the drop, it's replaced with something electro house oriented.

I've always felt the same way. For example, W&W and Dash Berlin are both lumped into "Former-Trance Big Room", when their sound couldn't be more different. W&W is electro (I find rather annoying), and Dash is super melodic (definitely cheesy, but I love it). Yet they're both "Big Room".

I think that "genres envolve" could also be understood as Progressive House envolved too. From it's old Deadmau5 way to this new SHM, Avicii form with the modern build-up-drop formula. Because this formula doesn't define Big Room, as 90% of the EDM genres have builds and drops. The difference between old Progressive House and this melodic house is much smaller than the difference between it with Big Room. I agree with this guy, they should be different genres. Because you are not the lord of the genres. People define genres together. And most of the people call this music Progressive House. So maybe they are right and you wrong :D

I don't have any qualms with distinguishing the difference between the different styles of big room (though it seems strange to me to retroactively rename a genre to something like 'Uplifting House' when it was originally called big room). This is something that can be reviewed. I take umbrage with the fact that EDM kids are set on trying to take over 'Progressive House' for no reason. I've had this argument far too many times. Please read the latest iteration: http://www.reddit.com/r/Monstercat/comments/2lx02w/who_was_the_asshole_that_fucked_up_the_genre_guide/clz3m3i It covers just about everything you've mentioned above. Jaime, I apologise that I hadn't replied to your original thread, I hadn't got any notifications when it was posted.
