Certainly, a proxy file size that much smaller would make a big difference. I'll look forward to that.
Hi, Chris -- I've made h264 proxies for a batch of MXF clips, but I can't find a way for the proxies to show up in the catalog. Only the original unplayable MXF clip appears there. The proxies are stored in a folder on an external drive and won't import as separate clips. Am I missing a step?
Still trying ... I relinked the clip file in the catalog to the proxy instead of the original, but it still won't play in Videux.
When you make a proxy, it doesn't add it to the catalog - instead it just plays the proxy when you ask to play the original. So you shouldn't have to do anything beyond making the proxy.
It doesn't play anything.
Possible that the proxy conversion failed. Which version did you try, ProRes or h264? You might try the other one and see if that works. Can you send me a small-ish MXF that doesn't play so I can test it? Please use WeTransfer.com and send to [email protected]. I'll take a look and see if I can tell what is going on. Thanks. Chris
I tried h264, since I was going for the smaller file option. Conversion seemed to go through just fine, but nothing would play in the Videux app. I think something's off because the proxy file (.mov) also wouldn't open in Quicktime. I'll try to send you a clip to test out.
Hi, Chris, I sent you a file via WeTransfer to [email protected]; the transfer expires on the 27th, so I hope you'll be able to get it.
I didn’t get it... can you send or post the link?
Here's the link WeTransfer gave me: https://we.tl/t-3tt70cm05Q
I'm sorry for the delayed response. If that link's expired, may I send you another one?
Sorry, expired. Yes, please, could you send again? Thanks!
Okay, here's the new link: https://we.tl/t-zVfHw9CHc7
Got it, thank you. First comment... I think Videux should play this natively, not sure why it isn't but adding to our todo list. I was able to get it to play using the ProRes proxy option. But the h.264 option did not play. Interesting... and a little disappointing. Usually the h.264 is very solid. But as above, will research and try to see what is happening there. In the meantime, unlink the proxy you have now (Clips->Unlink Proxies) and try the ProRes proxy (Clips->Make Prores422). Once the proxy is made, you shouldn't have to do anything - Videux will play the proxy automatically for you. You can manually set a thumbnail (Items->Set Thumbnail at Playhead) and it will pick it up from the proxy. More research needed. Thank you for the file, very helpful.
Good, Chris, thank you! I've made the ProRes proxy and it works fine, including the thumbnail. I'm not going to do this for the rest of my clips, however, because the proxy file turns out to be 438 MB, nearly three times the size of the original file's 165 MB. I'm very hopeful you can work out how to get Videux to play MFX natively -- that would be terrific!
Oops -- MXF.
Hi. I am just trying out Videux. I'm having problems with Videux reading my Sony FX6 (MXF - All intra) and Sony A7s3 files (mp4 - all intra). This app seems really great for my organisations huge video archive - but unusable if it doesn't recognize a very wide range of codecs. Will this be fixed soon?
Hi, Chris - I've been away from my projects for a while, but I see that the h.264 Proxy still isn't working for MXF files. I get sound but no picture. Hope you can find a fix ...
Hi kamosa, sorry, I had not looked at this lately either. We use an older version of ffmpeg to do most of the proxy making.I need to check and see if they have updated support for MXF – seems likely they have. You haven't tried the newest version of ffmpeg have you?
Actually I figured out that Catalyst Browse, which has a catalogue of nearly all my stored clips (but doesn't do keywords like Videux), can transcode an MXF clip to a much smaller MP4. But that's a lot of tedious extra steps to take in order to have Videux recognize all my MXF files -- not to mention having to create a whole separate storage area for the transcoded clips. I can't make efficient use of Videux until it can see and play MFX.
