Whenever I watch a classic Marx Bros. picture, I see an allegory of early 20th-century male (but especially, Jewish) immigrants. GROUCHO Marx represents the brilliant, embittered intellectual, who knows that he hasn't a chance of being appreciated for who he is in this WASP world, and acts out accordingly upon poor Margaret Dumont. CHICO Marx is a street hustler (who would be appreciated by the audience of today's TV series "Empire"). He is woefully less sophisticated, if almost as intelligent as Groucho. HARPO Marx has, by birthright, bigotry and misadventure, no longer any physical voice to speak up for himself. Still, he has his art. ZEPPO Marx is the dull brother whose handsomeness and fine manners represent the only chance that the MARX BROTHERS as a whole, and their untold examples of that time, have of assimilating into the American dream -- whatever that means!
